Iodine pentafluoride is a colourless liquid with a pungent odor and toxic. Density: 3.75g/cm³ , m.p.:9.6°C,b.p.:98°C. In contact with water, iodine pentafluoride hydrolyses spontaneously forming hydrogen fluoride and iodic acid. Iodine pentafluoride is not soluble in mineral acids such as sulphuric acid and nitric acid; only a slow, regular formation of hydrogen fluoride takes place at the interface between the liquids. Iodine pentafluoride is soluble in some fluorinated solvents or higher fluorinated hydrocarbons.

It is widely used as a building block for other organic and inorganic fluorides. Iodine pentafluoride is especially important in organic chemistry for its role in the production of alkyl iodides. Eventually, these iodides are used in the synthesis of alkylated organic compounds.

 

Storage: In cool, and ventilated stores house with temperature not higher than 30°C,keep away from fire, heat and sunlight.

Safety:  IF ₅ should be handled only if skin and eyes are protected with rubber gloves, aprons, face shield or gas-mask. Care should be taken to ensure adequate airing and ventilation of the working area.

In case of contact with IF₅ , remove the victim from the contaminated area and call a physician immediately. Affected parts must be washed with plenty of water and diluted sodium carbonate solution.
